Touch Sreynich

On October 21st, 2003, Tuch Sonich, a well-known Cambodian singer, along with her mother was gunned down by an unidentified gunman as they were walking out from a store. The incident left her mother dead at the spot and Tuch Sonich herself critically wounded. This is one of the series of violence that had taken place right after the general election.

Witness said that Tuch Sonich was shot in the face and the neck which could possibly end her career as a singer. Apparently, the gunmans intension was to kill Tuch Sonich but she survived the attempt. The reason for this had a lot to do with her mother who was probably shielding her daughter from the gunshots. Tuch Sonich was rushed to the hospital and later on flown out of the country to Bangkok for life-saving operation. Sources close to her revealed that after a few days in the hospital she became conscious and was able to recognize her own father. As of now, she is still under intensive care in Thailand.

The law enforcement in Cambodia promised to hunt down the perpetrator, but with no leads and the fact that the country is in a state where high ranking government officials are out of reach from the law, catching the gunman will be less likely to happen.

This is not the first time that such a cruel violence is being unleashed on a well-known Cambodian entertainer. On July 6th, 1999, Piseth Pilika, a famous Cambodian actress and classical dancer, was gunned down in the same fashion in broad daylight. According to a French magazine called LExpress, there were strong evidences that this killing was related to the wife of the current Prime Minister of Cambodia. Not long after that incident, another actress named, Tet Marineth, was being assaulted with acid apparently by a jealous wife of a high government official. The corrosiveness of the acid left the skin of her face and body damaged like that of a burned victim.

The motive of why Tuch Sonich was targeted for the killing resembled that of Piseth Pilika and Tet Marineth. It seemed as though another jealous wife plotted this killing. However, recent evidences revealed that this shooting could be politically related, at least theoretically. Prince Norodom Ranarith, the leader of the Funcenpec party which is one of the three major parties in Cambodia, claimed that before the shooting, Tuch Sonich was singing songs supportive of the Funcenpec party. This act could possibly enrage the party in power, the Cambodian People Party (CPP) under the current Prime Minister, Hun Sen. These are just speculations. The true is still under investigation.

Politically related violence is common in Cambodia. Just a few days before Tuch Sonich was shot, the president of an opposition newspaper was shot as well. Authority claimed that it was a result of a robbery. In fact, a person has confessed to this crime. But again, a country with corrupted officials anything can happen.

Tuch Sonich was considered one of the top Cambodian female singers, only second to Meng Keo Pichetta. She became a well-known singer in 1993 after winning a national singing contest. Recently, she had finished her education and became a professor of Khmer Literature. She is by far the most educated among the women in the entertaining profession.

A rumor had spread all over Cambodia recently that Touch Srey Nich who was shot in 2003 had died. Kohsantepheapdaily had released an article to clear up the rumor. Mr. Nop Chandara of Khosantepheapdaily reported from Long Beach, CA USA on May 8, 2007 that the rumor was not true.

Mr. Nop, Chandara said he had received a lot of e-mail from Cambodians living in Cambodia, asking him about the unfortunate news. He said that Touch Srey Nich now lives in USA as a legal permanent resident. He had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Pong Kith who is her neighbor and also helped her to get into the USA on Monday May 7, 2007. Mr. Pong Kith told Mr. Nop, Chandara that he always visited her and her father. He actually just talked to her father via telephone today.

Mr. Pong Kith said Touch Srey Nich is healthy and studies English at home. He also said she hoped one day she would be able to go to a college for her education. She is attended by a visiting nurse. She is on a diet program and monitored by a nutritionist because of her weight problem due to her inactivity.

The latest news that I receive from magazine released an article about Touch Srey Nich’s weight problem and that she weighed almost 130 kilograms which was considered overweight. Angkorthom Magazine also reported that Touch Srey Nich could move around with a wheelchair. She had been invited to sing for a Student Association event in Utah State and awarded $5,000USD.

Meng Keo Pichenda

Cambodian pop singer Meng Keopichda lives in Khan Meanchey district in Phnom Penh with her husband, Moung Khim, deputy director of the Central Department of the Ministry of Interiors judicial police. Married in 2005, they have one son and she is now five months pregnant with their second child.

Born in 1976 in Treang district, Takeo Province, to a farming family, Meng Keopichda began her singing career as an 11-year-old in 1986. Since then, she has recorded more than 3,000 songs on CD and VCD. On a tour around her villa, which she and her husband built between 2006 and 2007, she gave Prime Location an insight into the homelife of an iconic Cambodian pop star.

My favourite parts of my home are the living room, the bedroom, the family room and the study, in that order. But my favourite place to relax is in the living room with my husband and my children, where we sometimes watch TV.

I relax by cleaning my home or by making clothes. I make my own designs. I also like to spend time in my garden. I often buy small plants from the market to plant in the garden. I am a big fan of cooking and, naturally, I like to listen to music and sing karaoke. My husband likes to relax by feeding our animals. We have a family dog, plus ducks and chickens.

I don�t have much time to entertain because I am so busy with my job. When I can, I like to throw parties on the weekends for my friends and relatives. I like to ply them with wine and beer and cook nice food. Because my home is still new, my guests tend to want a tour of the house, and I am happy to oblige. I also like to sing songs or listen to music with them, which we usually do in the family room.

My decorating style incorporates Khmer and modern elements. I love decorating and have taken care of the interior design of the house myself. My house is made of wood, so it looks very beautiful. I like to keep things simple, without creating too much clutter. I also have many pictures on the walls, mostly of the countryside and my family.

My home is just how I like it, although I always have plans to change things like my tablecloths, bed coverings and rugs. However, I am so busy I don’t know when I will find the time.

I like to live in this area because it is so quiet. Living here fills me with happiness, and I don�t want to ever move to another area.

In the future I want to build another modern villa. I don�t want it to be too big as I don�t have the time to keep a big house clean and to design the interiors. But I want to have modern things in my villa, as well as a swimming pool, garden and gazebo.

Pich Sophea’s Biography in Brief

Pich Sophea was born in 1985 in Prey Veng Province and was called by the nickname Sdey by close families and friends. She is the youngest of four sisters. Her father name is O Sarin. Her mother name is Saron. Her oldest sister is married and the other two are singers. Sophea had to make her own earnings for your family while growing by selling sugarcane juice on the streets, which was barely enough for her family. By the time she reached the 11th grade in high school, she dropped out early to become a restaurant singer in order to financially provide fulltime for your family.

Fortunately, her fortune had finally arrived when Rasmey Hang Meas Production, the most popular music production in Cambodia, noted her growing popularity in Phnom Penh. In 2004, Pich Sophea blissfully signed a contract with Rasmey Hang Meas. She became an instant star with her debut song “Better Day.”

In 2009, Pich Sophea toured France and performed concerts with label buddies Nob Panharith and Chhet Sovannpanha. Most Cambodians living in France like her songs and support her. The concerts were successful and generated more money than expected.

Soon after her arrival home, she was invited to perform in TV5’s Top Ten Concert and on the Asean Television channel. Loyal fans expected new songs after her recent absence but only to be a little disappointed to see she performing old releases.

At the age of 19, she became a singer for Rasmey Hang Meas Production (2005) after she auditioned for a music show on Cambodian CTN Television. The producers of Rasmey Hang Meas were instantly drawn to her soulful and rockish voice. After a few vocal tests, she was offered a five year contract with Rasmey Hang Meas Production. She happily accepted the offer and became the youngest to sing for Rasmey Hang Meas Production.

Chhet Sovan Panha has released many chart-topping albums one after another. Her first song “Mouse Loves Rice” shot straight to the top and made her a Pop Princess in Cambodia. Her debut album “Mouse Loves Rice (2005)” sold an amazing 500 copies domestically and became the biggest selling debut album by a female artist ever in Cambodia music history. In light of the success of “Mouse Loves Rice (2005)”, Panha continued to work on more different styles of music, including popular folk dance, New Year Rhythm, and of course modern pop music. One of the biggest female albums of 2006 in Cambodian Pop culture is her album, “Romance Of The Wind (2006)” – a collaboration with pop sensations Kim Leakhena and Pich Sophea. The album spawned four #1 songs and has sold almost 620 copies to date. Due to massive success with “Romance Of The Wind (2006)”, she released a follow up album entitled, “Love Tree (2006)”, with Kim Leakhena and Pich Sophea again. The three were then dubbed the 3 Angels of RHM. Sovan Panha has worked with many top producers and songwriters, and has also written her own music as well. Her major follow up album was “Guitarist In Tears (2007)”, which has sold almost 720 copies domestically. After taking a break from music due to personal and family reasons for almost two years, Chhet Sovan Panha returned to the music scene in late 2009 with a brand new album entitled, “The Loneliness Heart (2009)”. The album is her most critically acclaimed album to date and marks a new era of music domination by Sovan Panha. The first single off the album, “The Path To End Love”, was released in August 2009 and the song spent an amazing 41 weeks on the Khmer Music Chart, including 23 weeks at the #1 spot. She is the only artist to have a video clip for every song she records. She is a favorite amongst teenagers, as well as the older generations.

Chhet Sovan Panha toured Malaysia in 2008 and 2009. She toured Australia in March – April, 2010, where she performed at several concert events and also shot a music video there. Currently, she is touring France and Switzerland with label mates, Nop Bayyareth and Pich Sophea.
